Sharon Fields-McCormick has been a missionary with the North American Mission Board. (NAMB) since 2003. In the last few years, she has travelled throughout the United States increasing awareness of sex trafficking of American children and encouraging churches to get involved.
As the Director of Church and Community Ministry for the Atlanta Association of Southern Baptist Churches (GA) from 2006-2011, she coordinated opportunities for churches to serve in local, state and national missions. Sharon helped to establish the Atlanta Pregnancy Resource Center, authored and administered grants creating a health ministry to motorcyclists and health ministries in ten area churches. In 2011, she and her husband began serving with the NorthEast (GA) Area Missions Program. Sharon continues with her work mobilizing churches to get involved in addressing the issue of domestic human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) and spoke at the 2010 National WMU Missions Celebration in Orlando. The September 2010 issue of Missions Mosaic magazine highlights her trafficking-awareness ministry. She serves as a chaplain with the Georgia and South Carolina Disaster Relief ministries.
Background: Sharon received an AA from Anderson University (SC), a BS in psychology/sociology from Presbyterian College (SC) and a M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Georgia. She was a civilian employee with the Department of the Army in Germany and served as the Executive Director of the Mental Health Association in Spartanburg, SC, for 14 years. Her first assignment with NAMB was in War, WV, at the Big Creek TEAM Center from 2003-2005. She has served on various nonprofit boards and has received numerous awards in the field of mental health. Sharon received the Anderson University 2009 Alumni Service Award in honor of her life of service.
Sharon’s husband, Jack McCormick, is also a NAMB missionary and serves in construction ministry and disaster relief. They were called out as missionaries from Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC. The story of their call to ministry is included in Edna Ellison’s book Stronger Still. Living “typical American lives,” they left their careers and sold their home to become full-time missions volunteers. They share their testimony about the adventures of serving God.
Her life verse is 1 Peter 4:10. “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”
